Cedar and Salt Shortlisted for Pacific Northwest Book Awards
Featuring more than 100 recipes that showcase the best of Vancouver Island’s homegrown and locally produced ingredients, Cedar and Salt: Vancouver Island Recipes from Forest, Farm, Field and Sea is one of twelve titles—of nearly 400 submissions—shortlisted in the competition. Thoughtfully curated by Vancouver Islanders Acken and Lycopolus, and beautifully photographed by Acken, it is a celebration of the incredible foods to be experienced on Vancouver Island.
“Lush and eloquent . . . Cedar and Salt is among a new breed of regional Canadian explorations. Inextricable from its location, it’s a snapshot of a specific food culture with expansive appeal all the same . . . The choice to structure the book by geography coupled with Acken’s atmospheric photography gives readers a deeper sense of place.” —National Post
Now in its 55th year, the Pacific Northwest Book Awards are presented by the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association in celebration of authors who live in British Columbia, Alberta, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The competition forgoes categories in favour of appreciating the submitted books without limitations, and the shortlist was selected by a committee of independent booksellers from the region. Six of the shortlisted titles will be announced as winners in January 2021.
Cedar and Salt has also been honoured as winner of a 2019 Alcuin Society Award for Excellence in Book Design and a 2020 Gourmand World Cookbook Award in Canada, and as a finalist for the 2020 Taste Canada Awards and the 2020 BC and Yukon Book Prizes. As well, it was selected as one of the Globe and Mail’s Top 100 Books that Shaped 2019.
